My Moroccan Journey Begins: Orientation and Adaptation

Finally!
To all my family and friends who have been waiting to hear about my trip and see some blog posts - the wait is over! I finally have the time to sit back and reflect a bit on the last few days, and I am so excited to begin blogging about my amazing opportunity that is a semester abroad in Morocco!
So before I dive right into all the stories, let me talk briefly about my trip getting from the US to Morocco...
I flew from Minneapolis to JFK airport in New York, and then straight through the night to Casablanca, Morocco. The overnight flight wasn't bad, in fact, the plane was fairly empty - leaving room to stretch out and make sleeping tents. The food was also quite a pleasant surprise - I had salmon! However, I can't lie. As the lights dimmed and people fell asleep, there were a few tears. These emotions are REAL, people! I missed my family, had no idea what to expect from this trip, and was exceptionally exhausted from all the traveling. Once we landed in Morocco, things changed. I was immediately excited! My traveling buddy Paola (who I had just met the day before) and I then waited at the Casablanca airport for a few other people to take the train together. Everyone is so kind! I have grown to love my fellow international friends like family. We all watch out for one another and each have special strengths to bring to the table.
The train ride was brutal. Not only were we a group of excited Americans in a foreign country, but we also had massive amounts of luggage - making it impossible to blend in, in any way, shape or form! We all slept on that train ride. Five hours and countless amounts of uncomfortable stares later, we arrived in Fes!

We were then picked up at the train station by some of Al Akhawayn's student ambassadors! I am so in love with Moroccan people. Honestly - and I cannot emphasize this enough - they are some of the most hospitable and generous people I have ever met. Not just the students, but the people we met on the train, who took pity on us as we spoke to them in broken French, Darija AND Arabic. They helped us load our massive suitcases, gave us directions, and constantly smiled and showed empathy as they felt our exhaustion. SO genuine and kind.

~~~~~~~~~~Jumping ahead...~~~~~~~~~
My university is AMAZING. Ifrane is a small town located in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The University is one of the main attractions, and most people know exactly where you need to go when you ask for help. My campus is so beautiful and looks like a postcard town in the Swiss Alps, especially when it snows. Yes, SNOWS. For anyone who was wondering, it does in fact snow in Africa!
It's day five now, and I've been to the marche (or market) almost everyday. You can buy almost everything there - as long as you're willing to dig deep, look around, and barter! So fa,r my main purchases have been: A pair of thick winter hiking boots (they are so very clunky, but so very necessary), a new pay-as-you-go phone for calling and texting friends in Morocco, Khamisa hand earrings (a Moroccan good luck symbol), new fleece lined leggings and socks, and chocolate! All this and more things from the campus store like body wash, notebooks and toilet paper...and I haven't even spent $100 yet!
Everything is very inexpensive here, and I am slowly getting used to the new currency. I am also becoming more adapted to the culture, as well! The simplest things are so different here, and there are some practices you just don't do. For example, they informed us that, as a woman, making eye contact with a man in a public space is an invitation for him to come up and try to 'get with you', as are many other examples that would seem so strange to anyone living in America! Also, staring in Morocco is not considered rude! This is something that I am still not used to, because when you are a foreigner and look out of place, people make it their business to stare. I'm talking constant staring!
These pieces of information and so many others have come from our three days of orientation. They made sure to brief us on how to dress, where to eat, how to converse with people, resources on campus etc. In a future blog post I want to list all the things that are different and expected at AUI (Al Akhawayn University) compared to my school back home in Minnesota! So stay tuned for that post!
Besides all that, the food is amazing, the people are kind (and smile at you often), the scenery is lush and the experience - rewarding. I know this has been a long post, and I haven't even covered half of what I wanted to say! Please look out for my next blog post! I begin my (daunting) classes tomorrow, so keep that in mind while waiting!
There are so many things to I want everyone to know, but for now just know this; I am safe, with kind people and very very happy. :)
Welcome to the World. Again.
Hello everyone!
I apologize, I know it's been so long since I've updated last. I have no real excuse, other than I has indeed been a crazy busy time recently. As some of you may or may not know, it is finals week in college!! And if you go to an intense school like mine, you'd be having massive work loads for the past couple of weeks! FORTUNATELY, I am pulling through it all well! I have had two finals so far; and received A's on BOTH!! It's awesome to see and feel that all my hard work and dedication to my work is paying off. And I actually feel like I am learning quite a bit!
Moreover, my work with our newspaper has gotten better as well, although now the paper is finished until next semester. On that note, next semester will test all my skills; I will be taking all very difficult classes, and I am expecting no mercy. So, I am debating not working for the Oracle again. It was nice to have that small income coming in, but I will need a better paying job.
Only two more days, and two more final exams to go!! Religions and Communications! I am studying for both of them in depth, you may feel the class was easy as pie, but when it comes to a final exam, you never know what you'll get. I'm trying to keep my head up.
On the other side of college - the social side; I couldn't love my family here more. We went out to a lovely Christmas feast at Bucca di Beppo last night and all dressed nicely and simply enjoyed each other's company!
CHRISTMAS IS COMING VERY SOON!! No matter what you celebrate, happy holidays to everyone! Be safe and warm this season, and get some loving family time in! I can't wait to get home and see everyone!
Life is really falling into place for me, and I couldn't be happier.
So, wherever you are in college, or in celebration, keep breathing and stay happy everyone!!
Happy Beginning of the Holidays!!
Hello everyone!
We all know Thanksgiving is just around the corner...and then of course Christmas is following right on behind it. But no matter what you celebrate or how you celebrate it, I wanted to say that I hope everyone has happy holidays, and spends some time with their families!
I get to return to Neenah on Wednesday, my brother is picking me up from campus right after my last class at 3. :)))
Words cannot express how excited I am to get home and see my family, lay in my bed, hug my dog, and see my friends off at other colleges.
It will be so nice to be reunited with the Mercury crew. I hope everyone is well.
Until then, I'm off to continue working my endless amounts of homework! Keep breathing everyone and have a great rest of your week!
Happy Thanksgiving (to be).
Sweater weather.
Hello all!
I hope everyone is having a good Monday, and enjoyed some good sleep last night!
I wanted to take this time to make sure everyone who is feeling the cold weather these days, is bundling up! This morning, (sometime around 3 or 4 am) we had our first snowfall, and I woke up to a very, very cold, brisk day. Make sure to keep warm, everyone! And stay healthy, especially if you're working as hard as us college kids are these days!
I thought I'd make a quick list of all the things I love for the cold weather.
- SWEATERS. Hence the title of this post - I just love wearing my large, over sized sweaters while studying in my dorm, or the student center.
- HOT Starbucks drinks! Especially a hot, chai tea latte with whip. It's delicious! For the holidays, Starbucks is also offering fun drinks like the caramel brulee latte, and the eggnog latte!
- Scarves, and hats! Making sure to wear these extra layers while walking to class - it really helps!
- Boots - With thick socks. Right now I've been loving wearing tights with boots and a dress or skirt. Don't forget a jacket!
- Hot soup - Need I explain my theory behind this?
-Anything with cinnamon. - Just such a warming scent and taste, especially in cakes, cookies and drinks.
These are all I could come up with for today! I'm sure there will be more very soon!
Stay warm and keep breathing!
Going abroad.
Here are some pictures from Cairo, Egypt...where I hope to be studying abroad to very soon. Fingers crossed!
An overdue hello.
Hello all,
I apologize for taking so long to post! It's been crazy these days, I know it's no excuse! Here are some exciting updates!
I had midterms for my first semester, and so far so good! I am getting mostly A's and a B+...which is awesome, even though it has been a lot of work to get to this point. I will be registering for classes next week, and I am beginning to create my four year plan for my college degree! It's an exciting process, but also extremely terrifying.
I have changed my major, and with these changes, I have people on my side, and I finally know what I want...what I need to do with my life.
I plan to double major in Global Studies and International Journalism with a minor in Middle Eastern studies! I couldn't be more excited, as I get to take Arabic at Macalester next year. It will probably be the hardest class of my life, but I need this right now.
There is so much happening with my personal life...yet at the same time, nothing is moving forward at all with my friends from high school, I think it's strange, yet exciting and great how everyone is finding their paths... I just wish the best for all of them. All of them.
As for me, I love to be keeping busy! Whether it be with the endless amount of papers I am writing, or working for the Oracle, my school's newspaper, or making meetings and connections with future colleagues and advisers. It's crazy. Absolutely insane, but I love it.
I can't wait to get home for Thanksgiving, though I'll be working at the Y again over break, and I won't be able to stay for J term, because of work. I'm still excited to get back home for a bit to see friends and family!
For all my family out there who keep up with my blog, if you ever want to write to me I'd absolutely appreciate it, and will try my hardest to write back!!
